Relationship between juvenile idiopathic arthritis and periodontal diseases

Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is an of unknown etiology that begins before the 16th birthday and persists for at least six weeks with other known conditions excluded. In JIA, there a destructive inflammatory process in border between bone connective tissue joint similar to supporting around tooth periodontitis. Objective: To emphasize role pedo-dentist multidisciplinary management JIA (to treat this detrimental disease it becomes irreversible). Patients Methods: A case-control study was conducted among patients Baghdad Teaching Hospital, Rheumatology Unit private rheumatology clinic during period September 2020 May 2021. Twenty Iraqi diagnosed by rheumatologist (after fulfilling International League Associations (ILAR) criteria), compared 20 healthy control individuals matched age. All were sent specialized pediatric dental where examination applied. The examinations two certified specialist indices Dental findings (dmf-s/DMF-S), Gingival inflammation (GI), Plaque index (PI). surfaces Ramfjord teeth examined diagnostic instruments (mirror periodontal probe) scored all indices. Results: According numbers involved, polyarticular manner most common 40% patients, followed oligoarticular 35% systematic 20% patients. addition, one case presented enthesitis related arthritis. mean gingival (GI) patients’ group (0.88±0.623) higher than (0.61±0.53), without any significant difference (p=0.0545). However, plaque (PI) results showed high statistically (p=0.0162), similarly, dmfs demonstrated (p=0.026) patient groups.
